How often do you meet someone for such a short amount of time and feel as if they were always there? And will always be. This past spring our little Italian was out for a visit, and we finally got in a little photo session. She is just as beautiful inside as she is outside. I hope, I hope, the next time we see her we will be in Italy. It doesn't hurt to dream big.

My parents have a big basement. Big can be good. But they do end up storing stuff that they would like to be rid of (some of this stuff may or may not be my stuff).

The last time I was over, Dad took me down to the basement and dug out a box of Grandpa's vintage camera collection. I had never seen it, didn't even know it existed, and I was so thrilled. The Bristols Ride The Katy Trail--THE MOVIE

Our family has caught the travel bug pretty bad. Or should I say good? Our trip this year, actually last year now, was the Katy Trail in Missouri. The Katy is the longest rails-to-trails project in the USA. This year we added the camping piece...gasp. Of course the kids were thrilled and after Randy bought me the most comfy sleeping bag and pad ever, I came around.

I am very proud of our family. The kids know this is no trip to Disneyland but they wouldn't trade it. Marley rode her own bike this year, about 300 miles on her 8 year old legs. And she loved it. I was proud of myself a bit too. I was worried that I would dread the camping (I do like me a hot shower), but it was just fine and I actually enjoyed the experience.

I took a gazillion pictures but you are spared seeing them all as Randy has once again done a bang up job summing up our trip in a video. He put hours into the project, picking through the video clips and the way too many pictures and came up with something we can show others. But really it is for us, a memento of our trip and our time together as a family.

Isabelle from Belgium and Flávia from Brasil, 2 English language students we hosted this past year, had one last thing on their list to see before they left for home: RED ROCKS! They had plans to go but nothing ever came together so we decided the night before Isabelle's plane was to take her back home we would hop in the car and head on over.

We stuck around to watch the sunset and since they were setting up for a concert we had our own backlit dance show.

Here's Isabelle. She makes wonderful quiche and has good taste in music.

Here is Flávia. She inspired me to keep on running and Marley still wears the shoes she gave her with a big spring in her step.

For the past 2 1/2 years we have hosted students from all over the world while they take English language classes here in Denver. Some we only have for a week or so and some as long as 6 months. We become close to each of them and consider them part of our family.

Céline from Switzerland and Jenny from Germany went with us to one of the First Friday Art Walks this past winter. I hung my camera on the mat hooks in a nearby car wash to take these with the self timer.

And, sadly I can't remember the name of this great vintage shop we found.

We stopped in to watch some Brazilian Capoeira. A mix of martial arts, dance and music. We were fascinated.

We miss you Jenny.

And Céline, we miss you dearly. I know when it is Christmas around here we will miss you even more.

A catch up post for the neglected blog...

A dear friend of mine wanted pictures of her two kids for a long time. I am so glad that she pressed through the busyness and scheduled our session. We hit the golden hour of light perfectly in an open space near our houses. Such a wonderful family and so glad to have them in our family's life.

If you have friends like Allen and Anna then you should feel lucky. As in fact we do because we have Allen and Anna as friends. When Randy calls up Allen and says, "Hey, do you wanna..", Allen says yes before he even knows the end of the sentence. Anna and I have have been walking buddies for about 8 years. By my rough and conservative calculations we have walked at least 2000 miles together. We love the walking of course but we don't kid ourselves, it is mostly about having a friend to talk to about everything.

This fall we met up to take some family pics.

Allen is an extremely talented songwriter. He wrote and graciously shared the song that you hear on my website. We also did some shots for Allen's website. Check his website out here.

It was such a treat to spend a beautiful fall day with Anne and her mom (a dear friend) at one of their favorite parks in town.

69 years together--my grandparents

This spring, I photographed my dear grandparents. We had to reschedule a couple of times because of weather, which made my anticipation stronger and had me laying awake at night a few times worrying that it wouldn't be just how I hoped it would be.

Here is Gigi's necklace with a charm for each of her 16 great-grandchildren.

Even though I have scolded myself for waiting so long to do their pictures, I am so happy now.

Having pictures of those we love is essential. My mom's cousin has undertaken a monumental project of researching, archiving and recording the history of his mother's family (my Grandma's sister). I love the stories he has to share with us and of course the photographs take my breath away and bring it home how important it is for us to have mementos of our loved ones.

Here is Gigi with her sisters Mildred and Frances. She is on the far right. This picture is from mom's cousin's personal collection and was taken in Lakewood, CO in 1938.

Constance is from Belgium and is living with our family while she is taking English classes. We have been a host family for just over a year now and have had students from Columbia, Chile, Italy, South Korea, Brazil and now Belgium. We get attached to each one of them and have gained so much from the experience. Constance fits in well with our family, keeps us laughing everyday and will leave a hole when it is time for her to go back home.

Here she is with my Grandpa at a birthday dinner we had at our house recently. They are laughing about the famous statue that he remembers seeing in her hometown of Brussels. Click HERE to see why they are laughing. That night she told her family's WW 2 stories to him and thanked him for his heroism and saving her homeland. It was a beautiful moment that I will never forget.

Mariella is from Brazil and stayed with us for only two weeks while she was taking some English classes. As we were coming home from taking her to the airport we were all stunned that we had gotten so attached to someone in such a short amount of time.

365 project---a picture for everyday for a whole year

Focusing a good deal of time and effort photographing other people's families can sometimes mean I am not taking the pictures I love to take of my family as my kids change, learn and grow. (You know how the cobbler's children have no shoes?) In light of this, I decided to take on a little project for myself---to make sure that I was holding a camera in my hands everyday, getting pictures of my kids and the pictures of little things that I ran across daily that resonated with me.

I haven't told many people for fear of the whole idea flopping, but surprisingly I have made it to day 85. I still have 280 more days, so we'll just see. I am using flickr to post each day's picture. Click HERE for a direct link.

our bike ride | the video---in 2 parts

Some of you know about our bike trip this past fall. For our family vacation we rode our bikes from just outside of Pittsburgh to Washington D.C. Three hundred miles over 10 days. We spent last summer on our bikes almost every weekend getting ourselves and our kids ready. It must be pointed out that this whole thing was Randy's baby. He took complete responsibility for getting our butts trained and ready for the ride and planned for every single detail from choosing the trail we would ride to making sure we packed a snake bite kit (which thankfully we didn't need to use). I really can't say with any sort of adequacy just how grateful I am to have him as my friend, husband and father of my children. We had the time of our lives.

Randy poured hours and hours into making a video of our trip. It is our souvenir. We watch it often and it makes us smile every time and makes me have a big lump in my throat too. It comes in two parts. You many want to pop some corn or grab a cup of coffee. I hope you enjoy it and that it inspires you to take that trip with your family that you have dreamed of doing. Marley is 7

seven | a list about Marley

1. She gives the best hugs. No really. She squeezes long and hard and gives so much of herself in each one. I drink them in and hope they will never stop.
2. She has a deep dimple on the upper part of her left cheek and we all are in love with it. It shows up only when she is being very expressive either laughing or crying. It was one of the very first things we noticed about her when she was born.
3. She loves spaghetti with butter and parmesan cheese, hold the marinara please. She considers applesauce and a piece of cheese to be a well balanced meal especially if there is a cookie at the end. The other day she packed a sprig of cilantro in a ziplock bag as a part of her lunch. She still orders rice when we go for mexican, with cheese on top.
4. She has a thing for shoes. I kinda do too, so I find it hard to say no when she sees a pair that she loves at the thrift store. Mom, they are only 2 dollars she'll say.
5. She learned how to put in pony tails at a friend's house recently. She is experimenting with this.

6. I had a strong premonition about her a couple of years before she was born. It was late, and Randy and I were trying to gather ourselves together and get our 2 very tired kids into the car after spending the evening with my brother and sister-in-law. I was walking out and turned around because I had a sense that we were forgetting something/someone....in my mind I was thinking, "Where's..." and her name was on the tip of my tongue but it disappeared like a dream does when you wake up. I knew that there was one more person in our family and I knew she was a girl.
7. Her relationship with her Daddy has slowly grown stronger and stronger. I see her wanting him more than me. She lights up and runs to greet him and gives him what we call her tackle hug when he gets home. They share the same birthday which I know gives them both a very special sense of closeness.

We love you Marley and can't imagine for a minute what life would be like without you.

Getting one shot of my kids where everyone is:

a) looking at the camera or at the very least in the frame and
b) smiling with a normal smile (not forced or cheesed) or at least not looking like they are about to die

is hardly ever in the cards. And as it turns out not really what I want to end up with anyway. Why not several shots showing what they really look like?! Meet the storyboard. I had this printed up just before Christmas and it makes me smile everytime I look at it.

I have been fortunate enough to get hooked up with a wonderful and amazing wedding photographer in the Denver metro area. I have been working as her assistant for the past year which means I get to shoot weddings (FUN) but with out all the pressure of being the one in charge (double FUN). Last month found Meghan and I at a truly beautiful and special hitching up in Estes Park.

And now for the baby part. Meghan (after the ceremony, the toasts and first dance, thankfully) started labor. Her little boy was born just hours after the wedding (and after a long drive from Estes Park to the hospital). Meet her new little man who I got to meet the very next day at the hospital.

I asked my oldest daughter to come along to help, she is good at making people laugh. She said, "OK, piece of cake." "P" comes naturally to joy, laughter and giggles. She can hardly contain what is bubbling out. This makes for a fast and easy session and one that had us all laughing. We barely got these done before Christmas but I am glad we did. My niece has a gift. She has an eye that sees the simple and beautiful all around her. She gives everyone she knows the chance to be their best; she believes in those she loves. She has started to integrate this gift into her photography and it is an amazing thing. I am so fortunate that I live close enough to see her grow in so many ways but seeing her photography skills blossom is inspiring. We have been doing some lessons on exposure, shooting manually and choosing good light. She is amazing and I am so proud of her.

We went outside for a few minutes a couple weeks before Christmas for a little mini photo shoot. We talked about how we both find it hard to be on the other side of the lens, but as you can see she has nothing to be concerned about. Isn't she beautiful?

A photo essay of sorts---just some of the things we are thankful for at our house this year.

The little beautiful things that we see everyday and hopefully we stop for a minute to pay attention.

The big beautiful things that are practically in our backyard, well, after we drive for an hour and half depending on the traffic.

New friends we have gained from all around the world.

We only had 3 broken bones this year....although we aren't quite finished with 2009. Everyone just be CAREFUL for goodness sake.

Our summer of bike training (we lost track of how many miles we rode), the friends that were nice enough to join us on some of our rides and...krispy kreme donuts.

Our big fat bike trip---in which we road our bikes for 300 miles from just outside of Pittsburgh to Washington D.C...AND...the brand new print we have over the fireplace because of it. You can read about our trip here.

And lastly, true love which resulted in one of the best parties ever thrown on the planet (hello!!! a mariachi band no less!!) thus making us all relieved that our little Josh was growing up enough to snag such an amazing addition to our family.

They wanted a picture of our neighbor's hamster Miss Bits. For obvious reasons. Miss Bits might just be the cutest thing we have ever laid eyes on.

But when I had time to go through the pictures I took that day, this is the one that most caught my eye. It's the little things that stop my breath for just a second and remind me how fast time moves and how I must appreciate this time. Thank goodness for photographs. I need all the reminders I can get. No offense to Miss Bits of course.

I have known the "B" family for...I don't know how many years. Safe to say over 20. I was their son Josh's fourth grade teacher no less. These guys are the cream of the crop type of folks that reaffirm your faith in what family can be all about. I enjoyed getting to hang out with them and meet the new additions to the family.

I am just about finished with all the editing, but wanted to get a little something on the blog now since they have been waiting patiently. a long awaited session

Kim and Jeremy are dear, dear friends. We have talked about doing a session for so long and we finally were able to do it. I had big hopes to end up with wonderful images for them---images that I could hand over and say "these are for you from me". Just to let them know how much they mean to our family. They are leaving next month to bring home their twin daughters. Typing this big & incredible news in one sentence makes my heart practically burst when I think of all the months and months of waiting they have had to patiently endure. Keep them in your prayers. We are so excited to meet the girls and welcome them home.

a may basket

This morning I saw two little people run up to my door to leave a May basket! According to wikipedia, the tradition is for the receiver to run out the door and try to catch the givers before they get away. If I would have caught them then I would have gotten a kiss. Too bad I was still in my pajamas....and too bad they ran away so fast.

Thank you, May basket givers so much for the very sweet flowers! You guys were very sneaky!

egg roll lesson

My friend Elizabeth knows how to make egg rolls. Madeline says they are "the best she has ever tasted". She is not exaggerating. Elizabeth brings them to her friends and shares them at the most opportune times. She brought me a batch of egg rolls when I was so sick with morning sickness that I couldn't cook anything for my family, let alone stand up and do anything. She is like the egg roll angel. Elizabeth was kind and generous enough to share all her egg roll secrets with us today. So, now Madeline knows how to make them. We can't tell you the recipe.....because there isn't one, Elizabeth doesn't believe in silly things like recipes.

I met the "A" family through my dad. Apparently, he said nice things to them about my photography...so thanks, Dad. Chris has known my dad for over 25 years. I would have loved to hear some of his stories about my dad, another time I hope. If you see Chris around, ask him to tell you his joke about the old lady that got pulled over, I thought it was pretty good.

One of their sons, Zach, is on his way to Iraq as I type this. Please send your prayers their way. He will be serving for 1 year.

I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with this family. If I can do as well as these guys did, I am going to have some really great people to hang out with when my kids are grown...actually my kids are not too bad for hanging out with right now.

I loved meeting the "O" family. They were up for all my suggestions and had some of their own. Thanks for the great idea of shooting inside the church since Red Rocks turned out to be quite blustery and COLD!! They joked that they only were capable of producing boys and we all wondered just what would happen if a baby girl made her way into this family. Maybe she would be a tomboy, possibly she would be doted on a little too much, she would probably know how to be tough around all the boys but for certain she would follow in the footsteps of those before her and be as cute as ever.

Remember the "A" fam?

I was honored to be able to document the arrival of their little one. I so, love, love, love the chance to photograph the very special event of someone new coming into this world. This couple was all about making the day special. They had some of their closest friends nearby to offer support and to share in the day. Mom was so strong and positive through her very long labor. Congratulations "A" family and a pile of blessings on your beautiful family.

snow day

Finally, we had some snow. Snow that shut the whole town down. We have had so little this winter that we were practically giddy when we heard it forecasted and disbelieving until we actually saw it on the ground.

The girls (Marley and her neighborhood buddy) played for hours and then they brought out their dolls to enjoy the snow too. They were pushing them in the swings.

Field trip to the Capitol Building

First and most importantly, it was in the 70's today! I am beginning to wonder if we really will have our usual big dump of spring snow. Today was gorgeous! We will all be sad if winter is really over. I can barely remember if we even got out our snow shovel. Not a chance to build a snowman or go sledding.

The capitol is amazing building and a great place for a camera head like me to take some fun shots.

We have watched our son get better and better. He will soon be passing up his dad. Randy was saying the other day that it is bittersweet. Sweet: to see your son do so well. Bitter: to know that age is not on your side and that you may just be an old dog that can't learn anymore new tricks.

Such a beautiful family and soon to have one more---any day now. I can't wait to meet the new addition. We were blessed with a warm sunny day, unusually warm for this time of year. This family is definitely the outdoorsy type so we were happy to move the shoot to a little park not too far from their house. Little "E" has the most amazing eyelashes!

I don't think we ever thought that this would happen. It could have been much worse and we are so grateful that we only ended up with a broken arm. Our oldest daughter fell of the ski lift. My husband was on the chair behind her and saw her go...about 14 feet. She raised the bar and was getting ready to get off. She skooted up just a bit too far and kept right on going. It really brings it home how we are not in control around here. She really, really wanted to have a polka-dotted cast but they told us the dots wouldn't stay so she ended up with stripes.

If you are in the Denver area, the Children's Hospital has the coolest ball maze and it is worth checking out.

didn't feel like winter

When I walked out to mail a letter this morning, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it WASN'T cold. We immediately packed up some sandwiches and headed out to the skatepark...during school hours (the beauty of homeschooling). We met up with some of our coolest friends and had a hoot.
